is adolescence and puberty the same thing?

A

adolescence = social construct not a biological state -

puberty = commencement and maturation of biological, physical and sexual characteristics

describe the adolescent stage of erikson’s psychosocial development

negative outcome = adolescent cannot make deliverate decisions/choices about careers, sexual orientation, or relationships

stage 5 = identity vs. confusion - who am I and where am I going?

A

11+ years they are part of the formal operational period = mental operations applied to abstract ideas, logical systematic thinking

what is hypo-deductive?

A

it is the capability of solving hypothetical propositions and deducing consequences - related to the formal operational period of piaget’s stages

what are adolescent’s concepts of illness?

A
  • physiological - good understanding of physiological cuases and nature of illness - internal organs effected by different illnesses etc… age 11+
  • psychophysiological - illness can result from and be aggravated by physiological and psychological causes

describe the outcomes of different parenting styles

  • authoritative = child is happy, capable, successful
  • authoritarian = child performs modestly well in school, few problem behaviors, poorer social skills, lower self esteem
  • indulgent = child has more problem behaivors, perform poorly in shcool, higher self-esteem, better social skills, lower levels of depression- likely to experience probmes with authority
  • neglectful = child lacks self-control, low self-esteem, less competent than their peers, perform poorly in school
