human influence on the environment Flashcards
(17 cards)
name some greenhouse gases
water vapour
carbon dioxide
nitrous oxide
methane
one human activity that causes an increase of carbon dioxide?
respiration
burning fossil fuels
one human activity that causes an increase of methane
food waste
one human activity that causes an increase of nitrous oxide
burning coal
effect of greenhouse gases?
allows earth maintain stable temperature suitable for life, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap heat when reflected keeping the earth warm
what can greenhouse gases lead to?
global warming
sea level raise
ice caps melt
flooding
habitat destruction
climate change
what is sewage?
faeces and other organic waste
what is an indicator species?
species that tend to only be present when an aquatic ecosystem is healthy
effects of water pollution?
aerobics bacteria in water polluted by sewage use the dissolved oxygen in the water as they break down organic materials, the lack of oxygen will kill larger organisms like fish, sewage can also contain pathogenic bacteria which are dangerous to humans
describe the process of eutrophication
- leaching of nitrogen waste into the river
- eutrophication, algal bloom formed on the surface
- algal bloom is blocking the sunlight
- death of benethic plants , due to no sunlight = no photosynthesis
- decomposition and bacteria increase
- fish need oxygen to respire
- no plants= no oxygen
- death of fishy BIODIVERSITY DECREASE
what is deforestation?
permanent removal of forested area due to a change in land use or due to logging
describe deforestation
decrease in trees
permanent
man-made
destruction of habitat
large scale
consequences of global warming
trees are carbon sinks
why does deforestation increase atmospheric carbon dioxide?
burning dead trees
decomposition of dead trees
less photosynthesis
why does burning dead trees increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
combustion releases carbon dioxide
no trees= no carbon dioxide absorption
why does decomposition of dead trees increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
fungi and bacteria respire as they decompose= releasing carbon dioxide
why does less photosynthesis increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
less carbon stored as biomass=increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
negative impacts of deforestation?
habitat destruction
extinction of species
global warming
soil erosion
leaching of mineral ions
increase carbon dioxide emission
