Human Resource Management (HRM)
A functional area of management concerned with the establishing, maintenance and termination stages of the employee / employer relationship.
Job Analysis
The process of identifying tasks that are to be performed in a specific job as well as the experience, qualifications, skills and qualities needed to perform the job effectively.
Screening
process of sorting resumes to disqualify candidates using successively more detailed examinations of the resumes. The objective is to locate the most qualified candidates for an open job.
Flexible WA
The employee varies their start and finish times (to meet personal or family commitments for example) provided they work the required hours. Flexible hours are adapted to suit business and employee needs.
OHS
is concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of employees in the workplace.
Motivation
defined as the individual, internal process that directs, energises and sustains a person’s behaviour.
Training
the process of providing an employee with the knowledge or specific skills needed to do a job.
Development
a process designed to prepare employees for future work activities and responsibilities.
Remuneration
the total compensation that an employee receives in exchange for the services he/she performed for the employer.
Induction
The formal process of familiarizing employees with the organisation, duties and tasks to be performed and the working environment.
Performance Management
PM involves the evaluation of an employee’s work and contribution to the organisation. The system is used to improve organisational, functional and individual performance through linking the objectives of each; it asses all phases of the employment cycle.
Outplacement Services
services provided to employees who have been retrenched to assist and prepare them for the future
Downsizing
a reduction in a company’s workforce through elimination of jobs, generally made to improve and organisation’s profit.
Job Description ‘duties’
A written description of a job’s title, duties & responsibilities, including its location on the organisation chart.
Job Specification
Detailed listing of the personal skills and characteristics required to perform a particular job.
EEO
providing people with a fair and equitable opportunity to succeed without any form of discrimination based on age, sex, race of nationality.
Work/Life Balance
is achieving the right distribution of time devoted to work, rest, family and leisure
Job Rotation
workers are moved between different jobs to increase variety of work and to create a flexible workforce.
Employment Cycle
The entire process from human resource planning to termination of the employment contract. It consists of the establishment, maintenance and termination stages.
Rewards Management
concerned with the formulation and implementation of strategies and policies that aim to reward people fairly, equitably and consistently in accordance with their value to the organisation.
Retirement
Voluntary termination where an employee decides to leave the paid work force.
Resignation
Voluntary termination which occurs when an employee leaves the workplace usually to go to another job. It is important for HR to conduct an exit interview to identify reasons for leaving.
Redundancy
involves a worker losing their job because the organisation no longer needs as many staff; the employee’s position no longer exists.
Dismissal
Involuntary termination of an employment contract due to incompetence or serious misconduct.
