What are human rights?
Basic rights and freedoms to which all human beings should be entitled
What does social justice mean?
Ensuring society treats people fairly whether they are poor or wealthy
What happened in 1948?
United Nations adopted the ‘Universal Declaration Of Human Rights’ (UDHR)
What is the uk government obliged to do?
Provide these rights to people living in the uk
What do all humans and children have the right to?
HUMANS= Freedom of speech
CHILDREN= right to protection from cruelty
What does equality mean?
Equal rights, status and opportunities
What does Christianity teach us about equality?
All people are equal because they have all been made in Gods image
What do Buddhists teach us about equality?
Treat people equally and express loving-kindness
What does prejudice mean?
Holding biased (usually negative) opinions about an individual or a group of people
What is discrimination?
Actions or behaviour arising from holding prejudiced views

What is the freedom of religion?
Right to practise whatever religion one chooses
What is freedom of religious expression?
Right to worship, preach and practice one’s faith in whatever way one chooses

Christianity

The persecution of members of any faith

What does positive discrimination mean?
Treating people more favourably because they have been discriminated against in the past or have disabilities
What is an example of positive discrimination?
Giving a wheelchair users front-row positions at a football ground so they can see the match

A business employing someone of an ethic minority to help the workplace more ethically diverse
What does Christianity and Buddhism teach about wealth?
Focusing on wealth can lead to greed and selfishness and neglect of spiritual practice
-but important to use wealth to help others in need
What are Christians attitudes towards using wealth?
-bible teaches that wealth is a blessing from God
-wealth is associated with dangers like greed and selfishness

What are Buddhists attitudes towards using wealth?
-doesn’t matter how wealthy someone is but how they got their money and what they do with it
-letting go of wealth is a way of overcoming attachment (spiritual obstacle)
-Buddha taught that happiness isn’t achieved through craving but through enlightenment
What do Christian’s and Buddhists believe about living in poverty?
It’s important to help those however the poor have a responsibility to help themselves out of poverty if they are able to
