Human sexual reproduction Flashcards
What is fertilisation
is the process by which the male gamete (sperm) FUSES with the female gamete (egg)
Where are genes found
Genes are found on chromosomes in the nucleus of each cell
What do genes do
Genes provide instructions which e.g. they can determine eye and hair colour control the activities of cells
The testes
The testes are the primary male reproductive organs (GONADS) where sperm cells are produced
Seminal gland
produces fluid to nourish the sperm
What do the prostate and the cowpers gland do
The prostate and Cowper’s gland produce other fluids that together with the seminal fluid make up semen.
Penis
The penis allows sperm to be transferred into the female’s reproductive system.
Scrotum
The scrotum is a sac in which the testes are…. This allows the sperm to be kept at a slightly lower temperature than the body
Ovaries
The ovaries are the primary female reproductive organs (GONADS).
Fallopian tubes
The fallopian tubes carry the egg to the uterus
Fallopian tubes are where FERTILISATION occurs
Uterus
an egg is fertilised it will attach to the wall of the uterus and the embryo will develop here
Vagina
The vagina is a tube into which the penis releases SPERM. It also forms part of the birth canal
What is puberty
Puberty is the stage in life when a child’s body develops into an adult’s body. The changes take place gradually, usually between the ages of 10 and 16
Testosterone
produced by the testes - controls the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as facial hair and the voice becoming deeper
Oestrogen
produced by the ovaries - controls the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as widening of the hips, ovulation and menstruation
