(11 cards)
DNA
is twisted and supercoiled into Chromosomes. Its function is to encode a detailed set of plans for building different cell parts. DNA is found in the nucleus.
Genes
An instruction manual for our body. They are the direction for building all the proteins that make our bodies function. Made of DNA.
Chromosomes
Thread-like structure in the nucleus. Composed of DNA and proteins; contains the genetic information in the form of genes.
Cell Division
ells divide to create daughter cells through the processes of Mitosis and Meiosis
Cell division processes, purpose:
Mitosis: multicellular organisms: growth and repair damaged tissue
Single-celled organisms: reproduction-asexual: offspring are clones
Meiosis: to produce haploid gametes for sexual reproduction
Mitosis
A type of cell division that results in two daughters cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
Somatic Cell
Any cell of a living organism other than the reproduction cells.
Diploid number 2(n)
The number of chromosomes in body cells; two set or 2N
Gamete
Sperm/Egg
Cells produced in sexual reproduction.
Haploid number n
The number of chromosomes in gametes; one set or N
Fertilization
The action or process of fertilising an egg. The fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote.
Zygote
A diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum.
