1

risk factors for mortality

temp elevation, increased time to initiate cooling, high number of organ systems affected, presence of anuria, presence of coma, presence of CV failure

2

3

Heat Stroke management

establish airway, rapid cooling, endotrach intubation, ventilation, IV bolus of normal saline

4

Mild hypothermia

32-35 C

5

Moderate

28-32 C

6

Severe hypothermia

7

Mild hypothermia presentation

tachypnea, tachycardia, hyperventilation, ataxia, dysarthria, impaired judgement, shivering, cold diuresis

8

Moderate hypothermia presentation

reductions in pulse rate and cardiac output, hypoventilation, CNS depression, hyporeflexia, decreased renal blood flow, loss of shivering

9

Severe hypothermia presentation

pulmonary edema, oliguria, areflexia, coma, hypotension, bradycardia, arrythmia, asystole

10

Fever work-up in non-toxic child

Look for easily checked sources of fever, rapid testing for viruses, perform UA by bladder cath

19

Hypothermia management

resuscitative efforts indef, 2 large IV with warmed normal saline to prevent hypotension

20

Fever work-up in non-toxic child

Look for easily checked sources of fever, rapid testing for viruses, perform UA by bladder cath

21

Fever work-up for toxic child

rapid testing for viruses, CBC, manual Diff for bandemia, blood culture, chest radiography, stool for WBC and guaiac if they have diarrhea, UA, obtain CSF
