Hypotheses and Operationalising Variables Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the forst this a psychologist kust do when undertaking a piece of research?
find what they aim to investigate and come up with a hypothesis
What is a hypothesis
a testable statement
What should a hypothesis contain?
- both consitions of IVs (operationalised)
- DV
- “significant”
What are the 3 types of hypotheses?
Directional, non-directional and Null
What is a directional hypothesis?
Clearly states the outcome
Used if there is prior research to suggest the outcome of the investigation
“higher” “lower” “more” “less”
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
There will be a “significant difference” between the two conditions of the I’ve
No prior research to predict outcome
What is a null hypothesis?
All experiments must have one
After experiment, researcher decides to accept experimental hypothesis or null hypothesis
“no difference”
What is an independent variable?
what you change
What is a dependent variable?
What you measure
What is operationalisation?
to make a variable measurable
whoch makes it specific and clear for someone to replicate
