Characteristics of Braided Rivers
Mostly conglomerates and coarse sandstones; typically there is very little mud in braided stream deposits.
Example: Cross-bedding, horizontal lamination in channel deposits.
Floodplain deposits in Braided Rivers
Floodplain deposits are rare due to constant channel migration.
Characteristics of Meandering Rivers
Typically consist of sands and muds and some gravel; includes mudstone, sandstone, and some sandstone with conglomerate stringers.
Example: Usually channel-fill deposits (trough and planar cross-bedded sands and gravels) overlain by overbank deposits (laminated and/or bioturbated massive muds).
Lateral accretion surfaces in Meandering Rivers
Present in the deposits of meandering rivers.
