Can be interpreted as “I am not what I seem.
Assertive statement declares he is a liar.
If “I am that I am” stands for God, then Iago’s self-description, “I am not what I am” is the direct opposite. Iago is the opposite of God, that is, he is the Devil.

The quote shows Iago’s desire to control every aspect of how his plan will unfold, since Desdemona has committed her crimes in bed, by sleeping with other men, she should also die in bed.

Iago subverts this concept of being honest and open in order too manipulate and deceive others as they underestimate his true character.
