Q

What is RGB colour?

A

Red, Green, Blue. These colours can me mixed to make other colours so that all web browsers will display the same colour.

20
Q

What does multimedia require in order to work?

A

A lot of internal memory, storage space and a fast processor
May require backing storage

21
Q

What is encoding?

A

Shortening data when inputting it into a computer system?

22
Q

How can text be stored?

A

Word processed and imported into multimedia software or typed directly into the multimedia software

23
Q

How can images be stored?

A

They can be photographed, scanned or obtained from the internet or clip art. The image can then be stored in a separate file and linked to multimedia software or the image can be embedded (which will make the file larger)

24
Q

How can sound/movies be stored?

A

Embedded directly into multimedia or linked to the multimedia software

25
What are the advantages and disadvantages of multimedia software?
Ad: engaging and interactive Dis: expensive and require high speed broadband
26
What are the two types of digital imaging and what are they?
Bitmap - made up of pixels, stores information about each one Vector - store information about geometrical objects or instructions for drawing shapes
27
What is the downside to images with pixels?
They lose quality when enlarged
28
What are the five file formats images can be saved in? A little bit about each
``` BMP - (BitMaP) save images in pixels JPEG - putting images on the internet GIF - create small basic web animations TIFF - made for scanners EPS - converts text and vector art ```
29
What are some tools used for image manipulating (editing)?
``` Imaging effects (red eye) Selection Cloning Distortion Transparency effect (remove background) ```
30
What colour tools can be used when altering an image?
Colour effects (changing colours) Colour palette Gradient tools
31
What effects can be used when altering an image?
``` Image effects (change pixels - red eye reduction) Transparency effects (remove background) Composite patterning (tool for repeating patterns - backgrounds) ```
32
What are the types of animation? Brief description
Persistence of vision - image after image for a 25th of a second Stop motion - physically moving models and then using persistence of vision Key frame - add only important images and the computer fills the rest 3D animation. - sophisticated software where complex movements are created beforehand
33
Who uses animations?
Film making/special effects Websites and VLE's Logos and banners for advertisement
34
What are the advantages and disadvantages to animation for commercial reasons?
Ad: attract attention Dis: long time loading
35
What are the advantages and disadvantages for animation used in education?
Ad: more engaging and enjoyable Dis: annoying and distracting
36
What are the techniques for planning an animation?
Folder trees - organising files sensibly Story boards - comic book format to plan animation Mood boards - a way to decide on colours, texts and images based on the target audience
37
What techniques can be used in animation?
Frame rates - how fast animations move frame to frame Looping - telling the computer to replay frames constantly Claymation - stop motion using clay figures (Wallace and Gromit) Rotoscoping - life action traced to make it animated, makes it life like Backdrops - the scenery, often real images put in
38
What are the file formats in animations?
GIF (Graphical Interchange Format) - basic software, limited features CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) - for vector graphics, makes compact files but does not support web pages PNG (Portable Network Graphics) - GIF alternative, better quality but rarer to have on a browser
39
Examples of hardware and software in music?
Sound storage devices - compress files and portably listen to music Sound cards - installed in a PC, you can connect to speakers to play sound Microphones - record sound on a computer Downloading music - albums or tracks can be pruchased and downloaded onto a computer
40
What are some file formats used in sound and music?
WAV - high quality but large files, good for voice recordings WMA (Windows Media Audio) - makes files smallerand better than MP3, not widely used MP3 - compresses music files and widely used, worse quality than WAV AND WMA
41
What are the two main types of area network?
LANs (local area network) | WANs (wide area network)
42
What is a network?
Collection of computers connected together so they can communicate
43
What are the three ways LANs join computers together? | (Network topologies)
Ring topology - connected in a circle, one cable needed Bus network - all computers connected to the backbone cable, cheap Star network - all computers connected to one server using hubs or switches
44
Examples of servers/hardware used in networks?
Internet - a WAN made up of smaller networks Intranet - private to one organisation and only viewable to them Gateways - allow networks to interact by translating data Bridges - join two LANs to form a larger network
45
What does an Integrated Point of Sale do (PoS)?
Handles payments in shops by scanning a barcode with the barcode reader, find the price and work out the price using a debit or credit card, after the payment the printer will issue a receipt
46
What does an automatic stock control system do?
When a product is sold the system will log to off the database, it will automatically re-order from suppliers if the stock is low
47
What is an operating system?
Programmes which allow hardware of a computer to work with software application programmes, for example Microsoft windows
48
What does the hard where of an operating system do?
Allows devices like printers to work with applications | Controls hoe computer memory is used by applications
