Ideal Occlusion Flashcards
What’s ideal occlusion ?
Harmonized static and dynamic relationship of teeth and jaw that dentist would like to reproduce when restoring a patients entire mouth to good form and function
What’s malocclusion ?
-can be due to improper alignment of teeth within the arch
or
lack of harmony between size and shape of jaws that prevents teeth from fitting together ideallky.
Which class is the ideal/normal front to back (anteroposterior) relation between upper and lower arches ?
Class 1 occlusion
How does each class of occlusion is defined ?
By the realtionship of first teeth to erupt in adult dentition ( maxillary and mandibular first molars )
If first molars are absent
By relation between maxilllary and mandibular canines.
What’s other names of class 1 occlusion ?
Neutrooclusion or normal occclusion
What’s class 1 definition ?
Relationship of permanent first molars where the
Tip of MB cusp of max first aligned with MB groove on man first molar
Maxillary canine fits in fascial embrasure between mandibular canine and the 1st premolar
What’s orthognathic and related to which class ?
Fascial profile of class 1 patient .
Straight line from the top half of the face to anterior border of mandible ( straight ) not inclined back or forward .
Gnathic = jaw
Ortho = straight ( normal jaw profile ) .
What’s orthodontics ?
Tooth straightening
What’s the other name for orthognathic profile ?
Meso-gnathic not mesiognathic
( lack of obvious protrusion or retrosion of resting mandible relative to maxillary )
Ideal occlusion require ?
Perfect fitting together ( interdigitation ) of upper and lower teeth
What’s the relation between incisal edge of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth ?
it most be normal overjet or normal horizontal overlap overlap ( see pic ).
Incisal edge of maxillary anteriors are labial to Incisal edge of mandibular teeth .
How does mandibular incisors seen in normal occlusion ?
Hidden from view by overlaping maxillary incisors ( normal vertical overlap , normal overbite )
What’s the normal overjet ?
Normal horizontal overlap
What’s normal overbite ?
Normal vertical overlap
What’s the position of maxillary posteriors to mandibular ones from buccal surface ?
Buccal cusps and buccal surface of maxillary posteriors buccal to mandibular arch
What’s the position of mandibular posteriors maxillary ones from lingual surface ?
Lingual surface of mandibular posterior teeth are lingual to those in maxillary arch
Where does lingual cusps of maxillary posterior occlude in mandible ?
Within mandibular occlusion fossa
Where does mandibular molars occlude occlude with maxillar molars ?
Occlusion Fossa of maxillary molars
Occording to vertical axis of each maxillary tooth where does it positioned in relation to mandibular teeth ?
Each max tooth positioned slightly distal to vertical axis of corresponding mandibular teeth
Example maxillary canine distal to mandibular one
Ideal occlusion require ?
Perfect fitting together ( interdigitation ) of upper and lower teeth
For perfect interdigitation of upper and lower teeth requires that teeth in each arch be aligned other teeth in each arch .
If one tooth in the arch in class 1 occlusion not aligned do we still call it ideal arch shape ?
No
