(10 cards)
What are the 4 main types of pathogen?
Bacteria
Fungi
Virus
Protozoa
What are some physical defence mechanisms?
Skin
Eye lashes
Body hair (around orifices)
Blood clots/scabs
What are some chemical defence mechanisms?
Tears Ear wax Stomach acids Mucus (membrane) Saliva Sweat Acidic vagina Antibodies Anti toxins
What is innate immunity?
Immunity you are born with such as external physical defences and other internal defences.
What is acquired / adaptive immunity?
Immunity that is acquired over life, this can be either passive immunity (some vaccines or breastmilk) or active immunity (from coming into direct contact with the disease or certain vaccines).
What is active immunity?
Immunity gained as a result of a triggered immune response, for example, catching a disease or receiving certain vaccines that trigger an immune response.
What is active immunity?
Immunity gained as a result of a triggered immune response, for example, catching a disease or receiving certain vaccines that trigger an immune response.
What is passive immunity?
Immunity gained that triggered no immune response. For example, receiving Antibodies through breastmilk or antibodies directly through a specific vaccinne.
What is an antigen?
A protein on a cell’s surface membrane which causes an immune response
What is an antibody?
A protein that binds to specific complimentary antigens and is produced by B-lymphocytes
