Immune system Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is the function of the lymphatic system
Drains lymph from tissues to lymph nodes. Lymph is a clear and watery fluid that helps the body fight infection and maintain homeostasis. Lymph vessels move because of body movements. Wbc move passively through the lymph system and nodes can swell as a response to infection
What are the two main lymphoid organs
Thymus - maturation of t-cells
Spleen - highly vascular, wbc develop here, can bleed to death. Removal can save bleeding to death but remain immunocompromised
What are barriers for immunity
Epithelia tight junctions
Kertainised skin prevents stuff entering
Internal epithelia have cilia, mucus, tears, peristalsis
What is the role of macrophages
Macrophages recognise PRRs, stimulating release of cytokines and chemokines.
