Immune system Pt.1 Flashcards
(14 cards)
Self-antigens
All cells are covered with variety of proteins located on surface that are not antigenic to self, but may be antigenic to others in transfusions or grafts
MHC protiens
self proteins coded by genes of major histocompatibility complex MHC
Antigen presenting cells
Present fragments of antigens to T cells for recognition
Two types of lymphocytes
B lymphocytes
T lymphocytes
B lymphocytes
humoral immunity
T lymphocytes
cellular immunity
Dendritic cells
Phagocytize pathogens that enter tissues, then enter lymphatics to present antigens to T cells in lymph node
Macrophages
Present antigens to T cells, which activates T cell and also activates macrophage
Adaptive Immune System
a defensive system that eliminates almost any pathogen
2 main branches of adaptive system
1.Humoral immunity (antibody mediated)
2.Cellular immunity (cell-mediated)
Antigens
generate immune response
Immunogencity
ability to stimulate proliferation of specific lymphocytes
Reactivity
ability to react with activated lymphocytes and antibodies released by immunogenic reactions
