Immunology Flashcards
1
Q
what is an antigen
A
An antigen is a molecule (usually a protein) that stimulates an immune response that results in the production of a specific antibody. (Antibody generator)
2
Q
Describe phagocytosis
A
1.Phagocyte engulfs pathogen
2.Pathogen enters cytoplasm of phagocyte in a vesicle (now called phagosome)
3.Vesicle fuses with lysosome
4.Lysosome releases digestive/hydrolytic enzymes to hydrolyse pathogen
5. Waste material releases from cell by exocytosis
6. Antigens present themselves on cell surface membrane of phagocyte- now called antigen presenting cell
3
Q
What type of immunity is phagocytosis
A
Non-specific immunity
