Immunology Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are pathogens
disease causing microorganisms
What is transmission
When a pathogen is transferred from one individual to another
What is phagocytosis
Engulfment and destruction of micro organism by phagocytic white blood cells
What are specific defence mechanisms
Involves activation of T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes against a specific antigen that has entered the body
What are antigens
Proteins that appear foreign to the Individual organism exposed to them
What is in the constant region of an antibody
Sequence of amino acid is the same in all molecules of the same type of amino acid
What is in the variable region of an antibody
Amino acid sequence varies between different antibody molecules which are specific to different antigens
What is agglutination
Refers to ‘clumping’ together of cells possessing the antigen against which specific antibodies react
What are the types of immunity
Passive and active
