Griswald v Connecticut
1965- right to privacy
griswald was giving medical advice to people to prevent contraception
was charged with violating the 14th amendment and charged $100 then went to supreme court and won ESTABLISHED PEOPLE HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO PRIVACY
Schenck v US
1919-free speech
handing out flyers saying avoid the draft.
schnenck argued that it he was practicing his right to free speech and press
state argued it was a clear and present danger and therefor a federal offense
US won
West Virginia Board of ED v Barnett
1943- religious freedom
jehova witnesses being forced to say pledge
argued for free speech and religion
school district lost
Gitlow v N.Y.
free speech-1925
gitlow published paper about overthrowing us gov
decided it was clear and present danger- gitlow was guilty
14th amendment still applies to state
Cantwell v Connecticut
1940- Religious freedom
johova witnesses spreading ideas with permission from people
charged with disturbance of piece with imflamitary and deflamitory speech
Connecticut won
established limited parts of religious freedoms and infringing on other peoples rights
Mapp v ohio
1961
police search house with warrant to look for gambling paraphernalia and found a gun and porn
supreme court decides it was a violation of her 4th amendment rights to charge her for the porn
McCulloch v Maryland
maryland wanted to tax federal bank in maryland. maryland banks running out of money.
decision- bank is constitutional- tax is unconstitutional
importance- congress has more power- states have less power than fed- loose interpretation
