Absolute monarch
A person who rules alone with unlimited power over the country

A contract signed by Mary and William of orange. It made it clear that the parliament was the real government of the countryside

Charles supporters. The word was taken from the french chavalier meaning knight.

A monarchy in which the monarch rules according to the constitution and laws of the nation

A government that is controlled by the people who live under it

The great Charter which guaranteed the English people certain civil rights
Republic
A country without a monarch
Ship money
In earlier times, coastal towns had to supply the kind with ships, or their value in money. Charles I made all towns and landowners pay ship money.
Tunnage and poundage
A customs duty or tax collected on the tons and pounds of goods coming into or leaving the country
Court of star chamber
A royal court which people had no legal rights
Presbyterian
A Protestant church governed by presbyters(elders)
Test act
An act forbidding anyone except members of the Church of England for holding political office or entering the professions
The divine right of kings
The word divine means “coming from God”. The Stewart’s believed that their powers as ruler came from God and that he was the representative of God on earth. Since his powers came from God, his decisions could not be questioned
Puritans
A very large and powerful group among the defending Protestants
