Improving EWT: Cognitive Interview Flashcards
(12 cards)
What was the cognitive interview developed for
To improve the quality and quantity of information retrieved from eyewitnesses
What are the 4 features of the cognitive interview
Report everything
Reinstate context
Reverse order
Change perspective
What is report everything
Report all details even some that seem irrelevant
This triggers important memories
What is reinstate context
Mentally recall the environmental and emotional context to cue memories
What is reverse the order
E.g backwards to prevent use of schemas that distort memory
What is change perspectives
To reduce influence of schemas
What are the 4 key points of ENHANCED cognitive interview
Fisher et al
- minimise distractions
- reduce anxiety
- encourage open ended questions
- build rapport
Which improves the flow of info
4 evaluation points
+ effective in increasing accurate recall
+ real world application
- time consuming and resource intensive
- variability in use
Evaluate + effective in increasing accurate recall and give small counter
Meta analysis by kohnken et al found a 41% increase in accurate info using ci rather than standardised info
Kohnken also said there was some increase in inaccurate info too
Evaluate + real world application
Used by police around the world to improve the justice system by reducing wrongful convictions
Evaluate - time consuming and resource intensive
Takes much longer than standard info due to 4 key parts to use e.g report everything
Also requires training if there is a need to use ci, not always done properly reducing effectiveness
Evaluate - variability in use
Police and justice system do not always use ci and sometimes use si, which lacks standardised info
