In General Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the 3 types of muscles?
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
What are the 5 properties that muscle tissue share?
excitability, conductivity, contractility, elasticity, extensibility
What is exctibility?
Ability of a cell to respond to a stimulus (chemical, stretch)
What happens when a muscle cell is stimulated?
A local electrical change occurs then sweeps across the entire plasma membrane
What is conductivity?
Electrical change that travels along the plasma membrane during a muscle or nerve impulse
What is contractility?
When contractile proteins with muscle cells slide past one another and the muscle cell shortens
What is elasticity?
The ability of a muscle cell to return to its original length
What is extensibility?
Lengthening of a muscle cell
