What is the Equality Act 2010?
Amalgamates lots of previous equality legislation in to one act, such as:
- Sex discrimination act
- Race relations act
- Disability discrimination act
What are the key principles of the Equality Act?
- Protected Characteristics

Which Building Regulations document deals with Equality?
Approved Document Part M
Why is equality important?
- Because its what we should be doing
- Ethical standards
- Must not discriminate
What is the CIC’s Essential Principles Guide to accessible and inclusive environments?
Sets out 6 key principles for creating a more inclusive environment:
- Contribute to building an inclusive society now and in the future
- Apply professional and responsible judgement and take a leadership role
- Apply and integrate the principles of inclusive design from the outset of a project
- Do more than just comply with legislation and codes
- Seek multiple views to solve accessibility and inclusivity challenges
- Acquire the skills, knowledge, understanding and confidence to make inclusion the norm not the exception
What statutory obligations exist in the UK regarding inclusive design?
Building Regulations Part M, Equality Act 2010. Projects must ensure reasonable access for people of all abilities.
What is universal design, and how does it differ from accessible design?
Universal = design usable by all, by default.
Accessible = targeted adaptations for disabled users.
Universal is more holistic and proactive.
