How did Isambard Kingdom Brunel contribute to Bristol’s docks?
In 1843 , Brunel built the SS great Britain , the worlds first iron hulled ,steam powered ship .Iron hulls meant that bigger ships could be created however the horseshoe bend on the Avon meant that these big ships could not get into Bristol. Highlighting the docks limitations.
What was the Floating Harbour and why was it important?
Designed by William Jessop and completed in 1809 at a cost of £600,000,the floating harbour eliminated the problem of Bristol’s high tidal range by damming and diverting the Avon ,It allowed ships to remain afloat at all times , making loading and unloading easier
Why were Avonmouth Docks built, and when?
Opened in 1877, Avonmouth docks was developed to accommodate larger , modern ships that couldn’t reach Bristol due to the river’s tight bends and shallow waters.
What industrial innovations were introduced in the late 1800s?
Steam cranes were installed in 1870, and in 1872 the Bristol Harbour railway was completed , linking the docks to Temple meads. These aimed to modernise the docks and improve trade competitiveness.
