Q

what are the key trends?

A
  • In 2007, for the first time, half the world’s population were living in cities (13% in 1900).
  • Third world cities tend to be bigger and fewer. There is often a “primate city”, much larger than any other cities in the country, where there will be an international airport and other facilities.
  • Urbanisation has not been accompanied by industrialisation; city dwellers often make a living from informal - sector work rather than being formally employed.
  • Marxism: the poor of growing 19th Century countries.
