infection and response Flashcards
(37 cards)
What are communicable diseases spread by?
Pathogens.
What are pathogens?
Microorganisms that cause disease.
What types of microorganisms can be pathogens?
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Protists
How do bacteria cause illness?
They reproduce inside the body and produce toxins.
How do viruses cause illness?
They reproduce inside cells, causing damage.
Give two examples of viral diseases.
- Measles
- HIV
Give two examples of bacterial diseases.
- Salmonella
- Gonorrhoea
What is rose black spot?
A fungal disease affecting plants.
What causes malaria?
A protist spread by mosquitos.
What are non-specific defences of the human body?
- Skin
- Nose
- Stomach acid
- Cilia and mucus
How does the immune system destroy pathogens?
Using white blood cells.
What are the three ways white blood cells defend against pathogens?
- Phagocytosis
- Antitoxin production
- Antibody production
What do vaccines contain?
Dead or weakened pathogens.
How do vaccinations prevent illness?
By causing a more rapid immune response.
How can the transmission of pathogens be reduced?
By immunising a large proportion of the population.
Do painkillers kill pathogens?
No, they only treat symptoms.
What do antibiotics kill?
Bacteria.
Do antibiotics kill viruses?
No, viruses are inside the cell.
What sources are new drugs extracted from?
- Plants
- Microorganisms
What is Digitalis and where does it come from?
A heart drug from foxgloves.
What is Aspirin and where does it come from?
A pain killer from the willow tree.
What does penicillin come from?
The penicillium mould.
What must new medical drugs undergo before use?
Testing in trials for safety, effectiveness, and dosage.
What is preclinical testing?
Testing done in the lab using cells, tissues, and animals.
