INFECTION AND RESPONSE Flashcards
(13 cards)
Define a pathogen
A Micro-organism that causes disease
What is a communicable disease. Give an example.
A communicable disease is a disease that can be spread through person to person. For example, chicken pox.
What is a non-communicable disease and give an example.
A non-communicable disease is a disease that cannot be spreas through person to person. For example Cancer.
How do Viruses reproduce?
They insert their genetic material into the cells. Causing the cell to produce more copies.
How do bacteria reproduce?
Through Binary Fission
How di bacteria harm your body?
They release harmful toxins that damage your cells.
Name the 4 types of pathogens
Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi and protists.
What organism is more likely to receive fungal infections?
Plants.
Name a defence mechanism against pathogens:
Skin, Thorns (plants only)
What kind of cell produces toxins to fight toxins produced by pathogens?
Lymphocytes, WHITE blood cells.
How do these cells fight off pathogens?
They bind to the antigen of the pathogen, causing them to not be able to produce pathogens.
What kind of white blood cells ingest pathogens?
Phagocytes.
What is a similarity between a bacteria and animal cell?
Both contain:
Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm
DNA in genetic material
