What causes IE?
A
Bacteria:
Strep. viridans
Staph. aureus
Fungi:
Candida Aspergillius
IV drug use

What are the signs of IE?
A
Sceptic signs: fever, night sweats
Cardiac lesions: change in pre-existing murmurs or new ones
Immune complex: vasculitis
Embolic phenomena: Emboli

What is infective endocarditis?
A
fatal infection of the inner lining of the heart (the endocardium)

How do we diagnose IE?
A
Blood test: for anaemia, rheumatoid factor
Chest xray
Echocardiogram

How do we treat IE?
A
Antibiotics
Heart valve surgery
