Inflammation Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the 5 pillars of inflammation
Redness - rubor
Heat - cabor
Swelling - tumour
Pain - dolor
Lack of function
What are the 3 types of inflammation
Acute
Subacute
Chronic
What cells release histamine, protease, heparin etc
Mast cells
What does pus consists of
Neutrophil, bacteria, dead cells and fluid
What is the name of an inflammation when pus is involved
Purulent inflammation
When do chronic inflammation occur
When antigen is not cleared
What does histamine do
Cause blood vessels to widen and become more permeable
Examples of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Ibuprofen, aspirin
What do nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs do
Reduce inflammation by blocking production of prostaglandin
How can redness/heat be reduced
Ice
How can swelling be reduced
Compression - reduce exudation
Elevation - reduce blood pressure/blood flow to that area
What are inflammatory mediators + examples
Molecules that initiate, amplify inflammatory responses - increase blood flow/permeability
Histamines, cytokines, prostaglandins
What’s it called when mast cells release inflammatory mediators
Mast cell degranulation
What does corticosteroids do
Effects the transcription of proteins in the inflammatory response
