Inherited disorders Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is Cycstic fibrosis ?
It is a genetic disorder of the cell membranes. It results in the body producing a lot of tho m sticky mucus in the air passages and in the pancreas
What is cystic fibrosis caused by ?
A recessive allele
What is polydactyly caused by ?
A dominant allele
What is polydactyls ?
A genetic disorder where a baby’s born with extra. fingers or toes. It usually cause any other roble a so isn’t life threatening
What does it mean if something is a recessive allele ?
Carried by about 1 person in 25. Because it’s recessive, people with only one cohort of the allele won’t have the disorder (carriers)
For a child to have the disorder, both parents must be either carriers or have the disorder themselves
What does it mean if something is a dominant allele ?
Can be inherited if jus one parent carries the defect
There is a 50% chance of a child having the disorder if one parent has one D allele
How. an embryos be screened for genetic disorders ?
- Before being implanted it is possible to remove a cell from each embryo and analyse the genes (genetic disorders can be detected)
-It is also possible to get DNA from an embryo in the womb and test for disorders
What are the arguments against embryonic screening ?
- Implies that people with
genetic problems are undesirable - increase prejudice - May become a point when wants to screen their embryos and pick the desirable one
- Screening is expensive
What are the arguments for embryonic screening ?
- Held to stop
people suffering - Treating disorders costs the Government a lot of money
- There are laws to stop it going too far. At the moment parents cannot even select the sec of their baby
