Initial Ventilator Settings Pilbeam Flashcards

Q

BSA calculation tidal volumes for male= 4 x Bsa, and for females = BSA x 3.5. What is this calculation going to give you?

A

Expired minute ventilation in L/m for a HEALTHY individual. To get tidal volume, divide this number by f (frequency)

Q

What is the underlying fundamental difference between IBW and BSA for calculations.

A

IBW does not take into consideration the metabolic needs of a patient. BSA is calculated on actual weight, so it accounts for a person’s increased metabolic need based upon their size.

Q

Four Risks to consider during the setup of volume targeted ventilation

A
  1. over distention of lung tissue
  2. repeated opening and closing (recruitment and derecruitment of alveoli
  3. atelectasis formation
  4. inadequate tidal volume setting (Pil p.90)

Q

Calculating tidal volume lost to tubing, (the formula) You need to know what the tube compliance # is (Ct) and the peak pressure reading during inspiration.

A

Volume lost=
actual volume received by the patient -
( Tube compliance x peak pressure)
