Q

What are the features of Iron ions

A

Found in the protein haemoglobin in red blood cells
The oxygen binds to the Fe2+ and transports he oxygen to respiring cells

Q

Features of iron ions (2)

A

Haemoglobin has a quaternary structure with 4 polypeptide chains each with 1 Fe2+ so each haemoglobin can carry 4 oxygen molecules

Q

Features of hydrogen ions

A

Determines the pH of a solution
The higher the concentration of H+ ions the lower the pH of the solution

Q

Features of hydrogen ions (2)

A

A high or low concentration of H+ ions can denature proteins including enzymes and so affect enzymes rates of reaction
H+ions are also used in photosynthesis and resperation along with ATP synthase for the formation of ATP from ADP +Pi

Q

Features of sodium ions

A

Na+ is involved in the absorbtion of glucose into the blood
Co transported along with glucose into the epithelial cells of the small intestine down a Na+ concentration gradient

Q

Features of phosphate ions

A

Phosphate ions are added to ADP to produce ATP in a condensation reaction during resperation and photosynthesis
PO43- can also be added to other molecules to make them more reactive

Q

Features of phosphate ions (2)

A

PO43- is also used to join DNA and RNA nucleotides via phosphodiester bonds in the sugar phosphate backbone
PO43- makes up the hydrophilic part in the phospholipid bilayer
