Inorganic Ions Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is an ion?
is an atom that has an electrical charge
What is an inorganic ion?
ion that doesn’t contain carbon
What is a cation?
ion with a positive charge
What is an anion?
ion with a negative charge
Where are inorganic ions found?
in solutions of cytoplasm and bodily fluids in organisms
what are the important inorganic ions?
- Hydrogen (H+)
- Iron (Fe2+ / Fe3+)
- sodium ions (Na+)
- Phosphate ions (PO4,3-)
-calcium ions (Ca2+)
What is the only negative important ion?
Phosphate ions (3-)
what are hydrogen ions?
Protons
What ion is the same as a proton?
Hydrogen ion
What determines pH value?
concentration of hydrogen ions
what is the relationship between hydrogen ion concentration and pH?
it is an inverse relationship
What happens to pH if there are more H+ ions present?
lower pH
What happens to pH if there are less H+ ions present?
higher pH
What reactions are H+ ions important for?
enzyme controlled reactionsw
why are H+ ions important for reactions involving enzymes?
because they control the pH, this means that it could affect the enzyme rate of reaction as a higher pH increases rate until it reaches its optimum point
why is maintaining pH important for cells?
maintains the metabolic rate
what do changes in pH affect?
enzyme tertiary structure, thus the active site of the enzyme
what are the two version of iron ions known as?
oxidation states
what is iron II known as?
ferrous iron
what is iron iii known as?
ferric iron
why are iron ions essential?
because they bind with the oxygen
what is haemeglobin made up from?
Iron ions
