Inorganic Ions Flashcards
(13 cards)
1
Q
What is an ion
A
An atom/group of atoms that has an electron charge
2
Q
What is an inorganic ion
A
Ion that doesnt contain carbon
3
Q
Inorganic ions i need to know
A
- calcium
- sodium
- potassium
- hydrogen
- ammonium
- nitrate
- hydrogencarbonate
- chloride
- phosphate
- hydroxide
positive ions
negative ions
4
Q
Calcium
A
- +
- Ca^2+
- Involved in transmission of nerve impulses & release of insulin from pancreas. Acts as cofactor for many enzymes
5
Q
Sodium
A
- +
- Na^+
- Important for generating nerve impulses, muscle contraction & regulating fluid balance
6
Q
Potassium
A
- +
- K^+
- Important for generating nerve impulses, muscle contraction & regulating fluid balance. Activates essential enzymes needed for photosynthesis in plant cells.
7
Q
Hydrogen
A
- +
- H^+
- Affects pH of substances (more H^+ ions than OH^- ions in solution creates an acid). Also important for photosynthesis reactions that occur in thylakoid membranes inside chloroplasts.
8
Q
Ammonium
A
- +
- NH4^+
- Absorbed from soil by plants, important source of nitrogen (used to make amino acids, etc)
9
Q
Nitrate
A
- -
- NO3^-
- Absorbed from soil by plants, important source of nitrogen (used to make amino acids, etc)
10
Q
Hydrogencarbonate
A
- -
- HCO3^-
- Acts as a buffer, helping to maintain pH of blood
11
Q
Chloride
A
- -
- Cl^-
- Involved in ‘chloride shift’ which helps to maintain pH of blood during gas exchange. Acts as a cofactor for the enzyme amylase. Also involved in some nerve impulses
12
Q
Phosphate
A
- -
- PO4^3-
- Involved in photosynthesis & respiration reactions. Needed for synthesis of nucleotides (sa ATP), phospholipids & calcium phosphate
13
Q
Hydroxide
A
- -
- OH^-
- Affects pH of substances (more OH^- ions than H^+ ions in solution creates an alkali)
