input and output devices Flashcards
(25 cards)
input device
any hardware device used to send send data to a computer
keyboard
an input device used to enter data , often characters into the computer system
numeric keypad
a keyboard with a group of keys representing digits from 0 to 9 arranged in a rectangle
advantages of using keyboards
1)They are common that everyone is familliar with them
2) They are easy to use and people quickly become familliar with their layout
disadvantages of using keyboards
1) It is easy to make a mistake when entering data
2) Unless users learn how to type , it is very time-consuming to enter data
3)Cannot be used for creating diagrams and artwork
4)Different keyboard are required for different countries as they make use different characters
mouse
Handheld pointing device used with a computer used to move the pointer/cursor on the screen. There are several different types of mice such as mechanical and optical mice.
optical mouse
an optical mouse emits light and uses an optical sensor to detect changes in the reflected light to move a pointer on a computer screen.
wireless mouse
a mouse that is not connected to the computer by a cable but communicates with it using radio waves
advantages of using a mouse
1)It is a fast method of input
2) It is intuitive to use as it simply involves pointing at things
disadvantages
1)Mice can be easily damaged or vandalised
2)Some people , particularly if they have physical disabilities , may find mice difficult to move
3)Overuse of a mouse can lead to repetitive strain injuries
4)mice need a flat surface to move on
touchpad
a pointing device , often found on a laptop , that allows the user to use to their finger to move a point on the screen
trackerball
a device to a move a pointer where a ball is pushed around directly by the user rather than being moved by the whole mouse being pushed
remote control
a small hand-held device used to operate equipment such as TV or stereo
joystick
a joystick can carry out the same tasks as a mouse as well as other functions such as controlling movement
advantages of using trackerball
1)A trackerball is stationary and does not need a surface to be moved on
2)It can be built into a computer and is not likely to get damaged or lost like a mouse can
3)it can be used by disabled people who may not have the freedom of movement to use other pointing devices
disadvantage of using trackerball
It can be difficult to use for some applications which need fine control.
driving wheel
also called a racing wheel , used as an input device for racing games and simulations where the user controls vehicles
touch screen
a display screen that is both an input and output device , that can respond to users interacting with a specific area.
advantages of using a driving wheel
1) allows users to control movement far more accurately than a mouse or joystick
2) Force feedback can be added to provide simulated road resistance
disadvantages of a driving wheel
1) Can only be used for one purpose , it can be difficult to use it for example writing a document .
2) Adding mechanical elements such as force feedback and fear levels increase manufacturing costs .
resistive touch screen
a touch screen that is sensitive to pressure for your finger
capacitive touch screen
a touch screen that is sensitive to static electricity from your finger
scanner
a device that digitises text , diagrams and images
hard-copy
a document printed on paper
