insect abdomen Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the primary function of the third functional region in insects?
Houses visceral organs mainly for reproduction, digestion, blood circulation, and respiration
How many abdominal segments can the abdomen have depending on the species?
8-11 segments
What are spiracles in insects?
External openings of the respiratory system found along the side of the thorax and abdomen
In male insects, where are the reproductive structures located?
9th abdominal segment (has tube like aedagus or penis)
In female insects, where are the reproductive structures located?
8th and 9th abdominal segments (fused to form ovipositor)
What are abdominal gills used for in aquatic insects?
Serve as breathing organs, especially in the young (nymph) of dragonflies
What are abdominal pro-legs?
Locomotory abdominal appendages usually found on the larval stages of some insects (e.g. Lepidoptera)
What are cerci?
Slender, forcep-like pointed structures found on the eleventh segment of the abdomen

What is the function of cornicles in aphids?
Secrete a repellant substance or evoke care giving behavior of ants which protects them from predators
What is a collophore?

Regulates H2O balance

On the first abdominal tergite in grasshoppers, main auditory organ
What is a sting in insects?
Found in most aculeate female hymenoptera, modified from ovipositor
