Q

Describe four features of a hose reel (installed in buildings).

A
  • Usually located within four metres of an exit
  • Can be in various strategic sites, dependent upon where they are to be used
  • Can be mounted using a fixed or swinging drum arrangement
  • Hold a maximum of 36m of 19mm black rubber hose
  • Have a working pressure that may be up to 1MPa

Q

(fill in the blanks)
All sprinkler systems, except drencher systems with less than ____ heads, are required to have a booster connection installed. The booster connection is to be located within ____ metres of a hard standing surface accessible by a fire brigade pumping appliance. It is also necessary to provide a feed fire hydrant within ____ metres of the hard standing surface above.

A
  • 12 heads
  • 8m
  • 20m

Q

Describe the Automatic Evacuation Sequence of floors within a building over 25m in height and associated tones for each level.

A
  • 1; affected level = evacuate tones
  • 2; two levels above = alert tones
  • 3; one level below = alert tones
  • 4; other levels = if the alarm continues for a set period, the evacuation tones continue to cascade in both directions

Q

Explain the difference between photoelectric and ionisation type smoke detectors?

A
  • Photoelectric detectors operate on the scattering or absorption of light by smoke particles in a light beam; they respond quickly to larger smoke particles and are suitable for general application
  • Ionisation detectors operate on the change in current flowing through an ionisation chamber upon entry of smoke particles; they respond quickly to smoke containing small particles normally produced by clean burning fires but may respond slowly to optically dense smoke containing large particles

Q

Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using thermal detectors in a private, residential kitchen?

A
  • Advantages; Advantage over smoke detectors because smoke is often unavoidable in kitchens
  • Disadvantages; Only once the flaming stage has been reached that heat detectors operate. Unwanted alarms can be generated due to detectors that sense a quick rise in temperature being installed in environments with fluctuation temps (i.e. kitchens - a fixed temperature detector should be used over a rate of rise detector)

Q

Describe the purpose of a booster connection.

A
  • Allows firefighters to regulate pressure and flow to a system of attack fire hydrants from a safe, remote point with a minimum number of FRS pumping appliances.
  • Booster connections also allow firefighters to apply additional pressure to a sprinkler system should the system pressure drop to a point where the heads run (stream) rather than spray

Q

There are eight (8) requirements for sprinkler valve locations as described in Australian Standard AS 2118.1 - 2017: List four (4) of them.

A
  • In general, should be located at ground level or not more than one level above or below ground level
  • All valves must be located in a secure room or enclosure, preferably adjacent to the main entry to the building
  • If the enclosure is located outside the building, it must be weatherproof and not more than 25m from a door that gives access to the protected building
  • The access way must be protected by construction that can be sealed from smoke and heat
  • Only approved equipment can be installed within the sprinkler room, no other materials should be stored in there
