Institutional aggression within groups
The importation model by Irwin and cressey claim that in prisons, people bring their own social histories and violent characteristics and this influences their behaviour in prison. Many pre-existing factors of imprisoned individuals may affect the levels of aggression in prisons such as drugs alcohol addiction race age etc.
The deprivation model suggests that aggression by prisoners or patients is the product of the stressful and oppressive conditions of the institution such as overcrowding, heat and noise and lack of activity and the deprivation they face within the setting.
Sykes outlined 5 deprivations that might arise from these institutions;
Deprivation of Liberty, deprivation of autonomy, deprivation of goods and services, deprivation of heterosexual relationships, deprivation of security. These deprivations lead to stress and so prisoners may react with aggression to reduce stress.
