Psychodynamic Perspective Flashcards

Freud
Freud developed a theory of the human mind that said our unconscious feelings direct the way we behave, we are deeply influenced by our earliest childhood experiences and individuals go through psychosexual stages of development (oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital)
Freud thought that people had an; ID WHICH IS THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE EGO WHICH IS THE REALITY PRINCIPLE SUPEREGO WHICH IS THE MORAL PRINCIPLE. If the person listens more to the ID the person is egocentric which means they are self seeking and selfish. If an individual listens to the superego more, the person is seen as conformist which means they are self denying. If the ID and SUPEREGO is well balanced that person is considered a 'well grounded person'.

Defence mechanisms
The ego is the decision making part of our mind, it has to work out how to get on with other people while coping with our unconscious memories. The ego needs to find a way of coping the pressures of the real world and the unconscious mind. So the ego has defence mechanisms to protect themselves from the pressure;
Denial: blocking thoughts from awareness
Repression: forcing memories from consciousness to unconscious mind
Rationalisation: reinterpreting events to make them look better
Displacement: finding a different outlet for feelings
Projection: projecting forbidden emotions onto others
Sublimation: a chance of state in the way mental energy is directed
Reaction formation: changing an emotion to an opposite emotion
