Integumentary Flashcards
(26 cards)
Keratinocytes
-produces keratin (protein)
-creates waterproof boundary
-protected by melanin
Melanocytes
-produces melanin
-freckles, moles
-transfer pigment to Keratinocytes
Melanin
pigment that makes skin color and protects from UV radiation
Carotene
Yellow orange pigment color and a form of Vitamin A for the body, protecting it from UV light exposure
hemoglobin
in blood → pink/red
Depends on blood flow (vasodilation and vasoconstriction)
Sebaceous Gland
Secretes oily sebum
Connected to the hair follicle
Dermal papillae
adhesive layer between epidermis and dermis; regenerate hair follicle + generate hair shaft
Sweat made up of….
water, salts (electrolytes), vitamin C, metabolic wastes
urea, uric acid, ammonia, and lactic acid
sudoriferous glands
sweat glands
Apocrine glands
one of the types of sweat glands
-less common than eccrine glands
-found in axillary and genital areas
-has ducts that lead to hair follicles
Eccrine glands
one of the types of sweat glands
-most common
-ducts lead to pores
Cutaneous Membrane
skin membrane
made up of dead skin cells
-dry
(keratinizing-stratified squamous)
Mucous Membrane
Lines body cavity that open to exterior (EX: respiratory, urinary, digestive etc)
-wet
Serous Membrane
Lines body cavity that closed to exterior (EX: thoracic or abdominal cavities)
Pain receptors =
free nerve endings that detect temp and pain
Meissner’s Corpuscles
touch receptors that detect light touch
Pacinian Corpuscles
deep pressure receptors
Dermis
has two regions
- papillary layer
- reticular layer
Papillary Layer
- borders epidermis
- has pain receptors
- has meissner’s corpuscles (touch receptors)
Reticular Layer
contains
- blood vessels
- sweat and oil glands
- Pacinian corpuscles
Functions of Skin
- vitamin d production
- protection
-detection of stimuli - excretion
- temperature control
Arrector Pili
small bands of smooth muscle connected to hair follicles
- creates ¨goose bumps¨
vitamin D
necessary for absorption of calcium and helps with immunity
- vitamin D produced when exposed to UV light
Basal Cell Carcinoma
(skin cancer)
most common skin cancer
