Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the 2 main sections of the skin
Dermis and epidermis
What is the epidermis
Top part exposed to external environment; made of stratified squamous epithelia and functions to protect from abrasions
What is the dermis
Below epidermis, connective tissue, supports and protects skin and deeper layers also assists in thermoregulation and sensation
Thick skin
5 layers or epidermis, no hair or oil glands, found in areas where there is more friction and pressure
Thin skin
Has 4 layers or less of epidermis, can have hair and oil glands
Dermal papillae
Papillae = bumps, dermis has ridges to increase surface area to attach dermis to epidermis
Hypodermis
Pulls underlying tissue and Holds skin in place, fascia = sheet or wide band of CT
Keratinocytes
Produced at lowest layer of upper dermis and move towards the surface, as they move up they fill with keratin and die
Melanocytes
Produce melanin to make skin color
Tactile cells
Sensory receptors for light touch; respond to light touch
Stratum basale
Bottom layer, Produces new skin cells and pigmentation
Stratum spinosum (layer 2/5)
Cells produce pre-keratin filament proteins, several cell layers thick
Layer 2/5
Stratum Granulosum
Prevents water loss through skin, makes granules of keratohyalin which is part of keratin
Layer 3/5
Stratum lucidum
Reduce friction between the stratum corneum and stratum granulosum
only found in THICK skin
Cells are dead
Stratum corneum
Superficial layer, multiple layers of keratinized cells, cells shred from this layer
