Q

DERMIS

A

-outer protective layer of body
-cells found in any connective tissue proper (fibroblasts, macrophages, occasional mast and white blood cells.)
-hair follicles, oil and sweat glands derive from epidermis but found in dermis

Q

HYPODERMIS

A

-deepest layer, not part of skin but shares skins protective functions
-anchors skin to underlying structures (mostly muscles)

Q

RETICULAR REGION

A

REGION OF DERMIS
-consists of thick collagen fibres, fibroblasts and macrophages
adipose cells found in deepest part of dermis
-blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat glands are all in spaces between fibres

Q

SKIN FEATURES

A
  1. Epidermal Ridges - produced from downward projection of epidermis between dermal papillae (grooves on palms, fingers, soles and toes)
  2. Fingerprints - sweat glands on top of epidermal ridges help to form fingertips in conjunction with epidermal ridges

Q

MELANIN

A

SKIN COLOR PIGMENT
-absorbs UV light and protects underlying DNA from UV damage
-grey hair = decrease in melanin production

  2. SUDORIFEROUS (SWEAT GLANDS)
  3. CERUMINOUS
17
Q

SEBACEOUS

A

GLAND TYPE
-oil gland mostly connected to hair follicles
-secreting portion lies in dermis and opens into neck of follicle
-secrete seloum (triglycerides, cholesterol, proteins)

18
Q

SUDORIFEROUS

A

GLAND TYPE
-sweat gland
release into hair follicles or pores
-eccrine (thermoregulation) and apocrine glands (BO smell)

19
Q

CERUMINOUS

A

GLAND TYPE
-found in external ear
-secrete cerumen (ear wax)

20
Q

NAILS

A

-tightly packed, hard, dead keratinized epidermal cells
-form a solid, clear covering

21
Q

NAIL FUNCTIONS

A
  1. protect distal end of digits
  2. provide support and counter pressure enhancing touch perception
  3. allow grasp and to manipulate small objects and scratch
22
Q

FUNCTIONS OF INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

A
  1. protection
  2. maintain body temp
  3. cutaneous sensation
  4. synthesis of vitamin D
  5. blood reservoir
  6. excretion/absorption
23

SKIN

A

LARGEST ORGAN IN BODY!!

24
Q
