Integumwentary Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the three main layers of the skin?
Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis.
What are the five layers of the epidermis?
Corneum, Lucidum, Granulosum, Spinosum, Basale.
What is the function of the stratum corneum?
Protects the body from external insults and prevents water loss.
What is the corneum made of?
Dead, keratinized, cornified squamous cells.
What does cornified mean?
Dry and hard.
Where is the stratum lucidum found?
Only found in thick skin.
What function does the stratum lucidum serve?
Provides additional protection to areas that are prone to shock and pressure.
What does the stratum granulosum form?
Keratinocytes.
What function does keratinocytes serve?
Helps form the waterproof barrier protecting the skin.
What function does the stratum spinosum serve?
Protects against infections and provides strength and flexibility to the skin.
What is the main function of the stratum basale?
It has a mitosis layer wherein it actively divides cells thus giving rise to cells of the upper layers.
What are melanocytes?
Cells that produce melanin.
Give 4 of the main functions of the dermis.
Provides elasticity of skin, nourishes epidermis, receives sensory stimulation, forms unchanging footprint and fingerprint.
What are the 4 structures in the dermis?
Abundant areolar connective tissue, blood vessels, sensory receptors, follicles and glands.
What type of fibers does the abundant areolar connectives have?
Elastin fibers.
What happens to blood vessels under high temperature?
It dilates then releases extra heat thru skin.
