Interferance theory Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is interference
When two pieces of information become confused
When is interference more likely
The two bits of information are learned within a small time fame and are similar.
What is proactive interference
Old information interferes with the recall of new information.
What is retroactive interference
When new information interferes with the recall of old information.
A study that supports retroactive interference
Baddeley and Hitch tested rugby players on the names of teams they played early in the season. Those who played less games remembered more.
A study that supports proactive interference
Keppel and Underwood used meaningless 3 letter trigrams, finding ppts remembered trigrams presented first, irrespective of interval length.
Study showing interference happens when information is similar
McGeoch and McDonald had ppts learn lists of ten words and then a new list of synonyms, antonyms, unrelated, nonsense syllables, 3 digit numbers, or the same list.
Synonyms produced the worst recall.
