institutional racism
analysis of internal factors nd ethnic differences
show you know all three and deal with them sepeely but also explain ho they can be linked together as parts of a whole package of inter related factors
when describing a factor(such as labrlling) spell out exactly how it ultimately leads to eduational underachievement
Labelling(ethnic differences internal)
interested in the impact of labels that teachers give to children from different ethnic backgrounds.
For instance black pupils often seen as disruptive and asians ==passive
result of negative racist labels-teachers treat minority ethnic pupils different disadvantaging them and bringing about sfp leads to underachievemetnt
e.g:Black pupils:Giliborn and Mirza Black children highest achievers in primarys school but not GCSE. Schooling is to blame not backgrounf
Gilbourn and Yourdell–racist expectaations(label)-expected dispcipline problems. more likely punished- pupils felt underestimated
concludes that there was conflict white teacher and black student
from racist seretypes that teachers have rather than behaviour
this caused underachievement becausse it lead to higher levels of exclusions
Asian Pupils:labelling
Wright found that asian primary school pupils were stereotyped by teachers and treated differently
teachers asumed children had poor grasp of english
mispronouncced names
saw them as a problem they could ignore
as a result asian pupils especially girls were marginalised affcting self esteem(explain why) causing underachievement
Pupils subcultures
Pupils react in variety of diff ways to racist labelling such as subcultures
sewell -black boys adopted range of responses to teacher sracist labelling of them as rebellious
-conformist-largist group-keen to succeed accepted school goals
innovates-pro-education but anti school-valued success not teacher approval
retreatist–tiny minority of isolated indivdiduals disconnected from school
rebels–rejected goals and rules and conformed to to the stereotype of black macho lad
despised both white boy
“black macho lad” teachers see them all in that way
which resulted in underachievement of many boys as a result of discrimination by teachers
Rejecting Negative labels
studies show not all minority ethnic pupils who are negatibelly labelled accept or conform to label. some may remain commited to succeeding.
Fuller -group of high achieving black girls in comprehensive school in south london maintained positive image rejecting
Institutional Racism : Internal factors
discrimination against minority ethnic groups built into the way institions such as schools operate ona routine
Critical Race theory see institutional racism as a deep-rooted lcoked in feature
for instance:ethnocentric curriculum -curriculum of british schools is ethnocentric
troyna and williams note it gives priority to white culture and english language
Ball states it ignores history of black and asian pupils
result may be that MEG pupils feel their identity is not valued this diminshes their sense of self esteem .
Strand found black pupils most likely entered for lower teirm xams
(link this to streaming and concept of teachers racialised expectations about black pupils0
evaluation of ethnocentric curriculum
however it is not clear wht impact the ethnocentric curriclum has.
although it ignores asian culture they still perform averagely
