Arctic Council
The Arctic Council is a high-level intergovernmental forum that addresses issues faced by the Arctic governments and the indigenous people of the Arctic.
Balkanization
divide (a region or body) into smaller mutually hostile states or groups.
Bilateralism
Bilateralism is the conduct of political, economic, or cultural relations between two sovereign states. It is in contrast to unilateralism or multilateralism, which is activity by a single state or jointly by multiple states, respectively.
Civil war
war between citizens of the same country
European Union
European Union definition. A political union, often called the EU, to which the member states of the EEC are evolving. Based on the Maastrict Treaty, it envisions the eventual establishment of common economic, foreign, security, and justice policies.
Foreign policy
a government’s strategy in dealing with other nations
Gulf war
Persian Gulf War definition. A war between the forces of the United Nations, led by the United States, and those of Iraq that followed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein ‘s invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.
Intervention
interference by a country in another’s affairs.
Isolationism
a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries.
Kyoto Protocol
The Kyoto Protocol, also known as the Kyoto Accord, is an international treaty among industrialized nations that sets mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions
Multilateralism
the principle of participation by three or more parties, especially by the governments of different countries
Nation
a large aggregate of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory.
Nationalism
patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts.
Nation state
a sovereign state whose citizens or subjects are relatively homogeneous in factors such as language or common descent.
NATO
is an intergovernmental military alliance between several North American and European states based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949.
NGO
non-governmental organization (NGO) is a not-for-profit organization that is independent from states and international governmental organizations. They are usually funded by donations but some avoid formal funding altogether and are run primarily by volunteers
Odious debt
In international law, odious debt, also known as illegitimate debt, is a legal doctrine that holds that the national debt incurred by a regime for purposes that do not serve the best interests of the nation, should not be enforceable.
Pandemic
(of a disease) prevalent over a whole country or the world.
Peacekeeping
the active maintenance of a truce between nations or communities, especially by an international military force.
Peacemaking
the process of bringing about peace, especially by reconciling adversaries.
Right to play
Right To Play is a global organization that attempts to teach children in need with educational games. It was founded in 2000 by Olympic gold medalist Johann Olav Koss, Right To Play’s programs are facilitated by more than 14,900 local volunteer coaches and more than 620 international staff.
Sanctions
a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule.
Security council
important division of the United Nations that contains five permanent members — the United States, Britain, China, France, and Russia — and ten rotating members. It is often called into session to respond quickly to international crises.
Self-determination
The process by which a country determines its own statehood and forms its own allegiances and government.
