INTRACELLULAR SIGNALLING MECHANISMS Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
What is a molecular switch?
A
A molecule that can be reversibly shifted between two or more stable states.
2
Q
What are 2 examples of molecular switches?
A
Protein kinase can cleave ATP to ADP
GDP and GTP can change between states
3
Q
Describe how a receptor tyrosine kinase receptor works?
A
The ligand binds to 2 ligand binding sites which causes dimerisation (receptors come together) and this cross-linking a,lows the tyrosine to phosphorylase one another.
The intracellular, enzymatic domain now serves as a docking platform for intracellular proteins involved in signal transduction. This often ends in regulating gene transcription which effects the production of proteins
