Intrauterine growth restriction Flashcards
(7 cards)
Define Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
Failure of the foetus to achieve its growth potential for a given gestational age
Define small for gestational age (SGA)
having a birth weight below the 10th percentile for a given gestational age
Symmetrical IUGR
Small head/small abdomen - decrease in the rate of cell reproduction, resulting in fewer cells
Asymmetrical IUGR
normal head/small abdomen - impaired growth of body, failure of cells to increase in size resulting in less fat and smaller abdominal organs
Common reasons for IUGR to do with the mother
Large litter size
disease
smoking/drinking
older age
level of nutrition
increased exposure to stress
living at high altitude
Common reasons for IUGR to do with the placenta and umbilical cord
high blood pressure
multiple gestation
uterine malformations
umbilical cord around neck
