Intro Biological molecules Flashcards
(8 cards)
Carbon
Ability to form 4 bonds with other atoms and chemicals
can have either single, double or triple bond
held by covalent bonds-C,HO,N,S and F
Macromolecules
large biological molecules with repeating sub-units and many functional groups -usually polymers
Functional groups
can attach to carbon
dictate function of compound
has specific chemical properties and functions
usually involve transfer(loss or gain)
when covalent bonds are broken, releases energy required in our body.
Monomers
join together to form polymers joined together by dehydration synthesis-hydrogen + hydroxyl group removed=H20
Polymers
Broken down by hydrolysis-water added=energy(ATP)
Water
Joined by covalent bonds-polar
Solvent-move particles during diffusion
Lubricant-joints+tissues, epithelial tissues and is a shock absorber
Regulates body temperature
Polar
Partial positive and partial negative charge-hydrophilic
Surface Tension
in a liquid attraction of particles reducing surface tension
Elastic tendency of fluid surface
Liquid air interfaces =greater attraction to water molecules then to air.
