intro lecture Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is Orthodontics?
- Diagnosis and treatment of misaligned jaws and teeth.
What are the goals of orthodontics? (form/function)
Form- Esthetics:
* Smile design
* Facial harmony
* Symmetry
* Psychological well being
Function:
* Optimize occlusion
* Best possible masticatory function
* Breathing
* Speech
Occlusal function enhancement: what must be established/ corrected?
- Establish harmonious occlusal relationship in the three planes of space
- Establish anterior coupling
- Correct Antero posterior and vertical discrepancies
- Establish or normalized the transverse dimension
how is ortho an Interdisciplinary care?
steps?
- Involves several specialties of dentistry
- Requires careful panning
- Start with the end in mind
- Result is dependent on the team proficiency and the patient motivation
Dr. Angle’s Definition of the Correct
occlusion and Tooth Position
Class 1
- Based on the relationship of the upper and lower first permanent molars in the AP dimension.
- “ The mesiobuccal cusp of the
upper first permanent molar is
in occlusion with the buccal
groove of the lower first molar
and a full complement of teeth
is present ”. (second half not true)
- Class ___ malocclusions are the most frequent malocclusions
% affected
1,
* And are present in 70% of the population.
more common maloclusions in practice populations
2 and 3
what causes 90% class I malocclusions
man not set far enough forward
malocclusions and spatial deminisions
Malocclusions are present in
the three dimensions of space ( even the fourth one: time)
Class II
The upper first permanent molar is positioned mesially in relation to the lower first permanent molar.
Class III
- The upper first permanent
molar is positioned distally in
relation to the lower first
permanent molar.
Role of orthodontics in oral health
- Esthetic: Improve quality of life by improving facial appearance.
- Functional ( Occlusal level) : QOL by improving function and mastication
- Functional: ( Sleep Apnea) :QOL improvement by improving breathing and sleep – Multidisciplinary approach
- Functional: Temporo mandibular care- Applicable to a small group of patients ( 10%)
how should ortho tx start
look at facial form before teeth
sleep apnea correlations
US: obesity
elsewhere: may be due to craniofacial forms/genetics
can there be good esthetics and bad function?
yes
what are the components of time that must be predicted
growth and aging
anterior coupling
man and max incisors meet at the correct angles
