Intro to ecology Flashcards
What is the difference between Abiotic and Biotic?
Abiotic- Physical like wind rather than biological (Not biological).
Biotic- Resulting from living organisms (Biological).
What are three concepts for evolutions?
The population size, difference in ancestors and variation in population.
What might natural selection do to a population of toads?
This could change their genetic make-up.
Is it possible for long term evolution to create new species, if so explain why?
Yes. Think about the whale, before being a water based animal, the whale could walk on land, however over time the ratio of land to water was too high and so the legs disappeared over time to better suit water.
What is Specification?
How a new plant or animal comes into fruition.
What is the meaning of the phrase Divergent natural selection?
Animals which comes from the same line of ancestors but change due to different conditions.
If for example a toad has a long line of naturally cold toads and this one toad moves to a dessert and becomes naturally hot, what is this an example of?
Divergent natural selection.
What’s the difference between allopatric specification and sympatric specification?
Allopatric specification is when populations are geologically separated (lions and mountain lions).
Sympatric Specification is when populations stay in same conditions but eat different foods.
What extinction wiped out the marine animals and what percentage was wiped out?
The Permian extinction which wiped out 90% of marine animals.
What does homologous traits mean?
Traits which are shared by common ancestors
What is convergent evolution?
Independent evolution of features which are similar over time (Like a butterfly different colours, shapes. The fundamental is still there from many hundreds of years ago).
When populations are separated geologically, what is term for this?
Allopatric specification.
When populations share the same geological location but eat different food, what is the term for this?
Sympatric specification.
When there is for example climate of physical wind, what is this called?
Abiotic
When there is biological difference rather than physical like climate, what is this called?
Biotic
